Somerset Budokai was started in 1980 by Fred East.

Kenbukai is the name of his dojo, named  in great respect of his first sensei Dunlop Paul.

It was formed so that approved students going from his dojo to open their own would have a reliable

and continuous source of syllabus, technique and friendship.

He has been with Professor Dr R W Mills Sensei, Chairman of BSKA, since then.

He was formerly a student of Dunlop Paul sensei, practicing Shukokai karate, kenjutsu from Kimura sensei

and Sai and Nunchaku since 1974.

He holds the rank of Rokudan (6th Dan) and is chief instructor for the BSKA for the West of England.

He became a Shinkendo student of Obata sensei in 2000 and held the ranks, awarded by Obata sensei,

of Hyaku-e and  Shodan Renshi Kaku and Shodan Toyama Ryu Battojutsu.

Kenbudo Japanese Swordsmanship is a result of East sensei’s continuous study since 1974, not just of techniques

and combinations but understanding of strategy, ki, tactics, bunkai, by thorough and continuous Karate and Kenbudo training.

Passing these arts to serious students is the only reason for the existence of his dojo and this site.

Kenbudo is a thorough sword system developed by him over the years. The syllabus is in the process of being formalised, with the help

and great efforts of Ben Gray sensei, a long term Sword and karate student of Somerset Budokai, who has his own Kizenkai dojo for Kenbudo.

Nitoken, the two sword system and cutting of thrown targets has been loosely  in the training schedule of Somerset Budokai for over twenty years and is

now retained in the Kenbudo syllabus. In addition, the breaking of timber with bokken is part of Kenbudo, taught to him by Kimura sensei in the early seventies.

Kenbudo is owned by East sensei and is not part of any other art or system by that name.

The morning sessions held at the Somerset Budokai Honbu deliver both Kenbudo and Shitoryu karate.

From time to time there are Saturday morning sessions for Shitoryu karate for high grades.

Prospective students of Shitoryu karate or Kenbudo are welcome to make contact for more information.
